About this course

This CE presentation reviews LGBTQIA+ history and its ongoing impact on mental health and substance use, while clarifying the difference between gender identity and sexual orientation. Participants will strengthen their ability to discuss LGBTQIA+ topics respectfully and apply affirmative practices to improve engagement and outcomes in co-occurring treatment settings.

  • Summarize LGBTQIA+ history and describe its impact on mental health and substance use among LGBTQIA+ populations.
  • Differentiate between sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
  • Use affirming, inclusive, and clinically appropriate language when discussing LGBTQIA+ topics in therapeutic interactions.
  • Apply LGBTQIA+ affirmative practices to strengthen therapeutic rapport and support engagement in co-occurring treatment settings.

  • McKenzie Cargin, LADC-S

    McKenzie Cargin, LADC-S, is the Clinical Development and Training Specialist at EOSIS and has 7 years of experience in MI/CD treatment. Previously, McKenzie was the Treatment Director at Latitudes specializing in LGBTQ+ care for individuals with co-occurring disorders, Clinical Director at Beauterre Recovery Institute, and substance use counselor. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, McKenzie is passionate about working with individuals in the queer community and advocating for other marginalized communities who face barriers to accessing care.

  • Jac Clingerman, BA, LADC-S

    Jac Clingerman, BA, LADC-S, is the Manager of Clinical Administration at EOSIS Tapestry & Latitudes and has 18 years of experience in substance use and co-occurring treatment. Jac’s background includes intervention and care coordination with A-I-R (Assistance in Recovery), providing MAT services at HCMC’s Addiction Medicine Clinic, and leadership roles at NUWAY, including Treatment Director for NUWAY III Women’s Residential Treatment Program. Jac specializes in working with underserved and marginalized communities, including women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, people with disabilities, individuals experiencing homelessness, and people with criminal justice involvement.
